Today marks the final day for our local postie Ranjit! Since moving into the area I would occasionally drop a few letters and parcels into the post office. 📮 Funnily I thought Ranjit disliked me at first... maybe because I took ages to sort out my post or maybe he just hated everyone! 😅 As, I usually witnessed him being somewhat irritated and annoyed by every customer. After getting to know him personally over the course of a few years. His once grumpy demeanour quickly changed and became a warm smile, every time I entered. During lockdown the post office became one of my most visited places, after redirecting the business to a direct to consumer model. 🎁 This meant he was one of only a few friendly faces that I got to interact with during this period. I genuinely looked forward to our little chats and his wise words of encouragement - we even traded Christmas gifts last year. (The man has good taste in wine🍷) It will be a shame to see him go! Since starting ART SIPPERS almost 3years ago I have come to understand that anyone who says that running a business is ‘easy’ is an out and out liar or is probably trying to sell me a ‘sure thing’ pyramid scheme. 😅 Nobody told me that running a small business would feel like taking part in a David Attenborough wildlife documentary. Yes, everyday is a battle to survive, but thankfully there are no waves of snakes biting at my torso during my daily commute. 🐍 Business is very similar to nature and just like the little lizard, you have to get comfortable with uncomfortable situations to constantly challenge and conquer your fears. It feels like we never really seem to stop and reflect on our wins or achievements in business or in life. We've begun noticing that we are constantly busy moving from a project, task or target that needs completing before that next deadline. 📚 Maybe it's deep rooted within our British culture to shy away from kudos. We both often feel hesitant about taking credit and tend not to celebrate the small victories or large successes. This usually stems from our innate fear of looking like we're 'bragging' or 'showing off'. God forbid! 😑 Is it even possible to tell friends or family members about things you’re working on without sounding like you’re full of yourself? 👀 We are taught at a young age that modesty and humility are championing characteristics and boastful comments will make you seem arrogant or even worse, narcissistic. This is NOT how you win friends and influence people. 😕 It's funny that we work so hard, but rarely do adults get opportunities to showcase our accomplishments. 🏆 The real shame is that, if people (including yourself) don’t see your true value, it’s less likely you’ll continue to develop your skills, grow and bring even more value to the table. 📉 With this in mind, we're going to do the very un-British thing and begin a new uncomfortable habit to document and share the things that make us feel proud... Last week we hosted the @Dnvenergy team with an ART SIPPERS in-person experience. Transforming a boring office space into a place for creativity and imaginative exploration. 🎨🖌 Half of the team had not painted since primary school and many told us 'I can't paint!' so the initial feeling of fear, anxiety and lack of confidence was fairly evident in the room. 😐 Fast forward to the end of the event and you there was sheer joy and shocked excitement coming from the employees mouths, as they stood in amazement at the masterpieces they created in under 2-hours.... Last night I watched a craftsman at work.
